Cutting Methane Emissions Without Compromising Safety: Preparing LDAR for a Hydrogen Future
The global oil and gas industry is at a pivotal point in its development. Climate imperatives, regulatory scrutiny, and technological advances are forcing a re-evaluation of long-established operational practices. At the core of this shift lies methane, the primary component of natural gas, which remains both a critical commodity and a major environmental concern. Methane is responsible for a disproportionately large share of near-term global warming, with a warming potential more than 80 times higher than that of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Uncontrolled methane releases from pipelines, valves, compressors, storage tanks, and other infrastructure undermine the industry’s climate commitments, present operational inefficiencies, and pose significant safety hazards.
