Editorial: Global knowledge hub and regional dynamics: The pipeline world between Berlin and Kuala Lumpur
The pipeline industry is at a turning point. In Europe, the course is being set for a future hydrogen backbone, existing networks are being prepared for decarbonization projects, and CO₂ transport chains are being planned. At the same time, the Asia-Pacific region is developing at a rapid pace, characterized by offshore projects and regionally varying regulatory and geographical conditions.
For two decades, the Pipeline Technology Conference (ptc) in Berlin has served as a global meeting place where new developments are discussed and experiences are shared. The outstanding feature of our work has always been its high degree of internationality and its focus on pipeline operators. With delegations from over 100 operating companies worldwide, the ptc in Berlin has established itself as “The Global Pipeline Event”. Here, international issues relating to planning, construction, operation, and maintenance are discussed, and experiences from more than 60 countries come together.
With the launch of the Pipeline Technology Conference Asia in Malaysia, we are expanding this model to include a regional focus with its own agenda. Berlin remains the central hub for the global overview, while Kuala Lumpur addresses the dynamics of a region where topics, conditions, and pace differ significantly. The response to the first edition in November 2025, with over 1,000 participants, has impressively confirmed that Southeast Asia needs its own platform for technical exchange.
Both formats are structured in the same way and begin with a seminar day. This proven concept from Berlin was specifically transferred to ptc Asia. The EITEP Training platform was developed based on this experience. It provides customized training courses, including in German, for specialists in the pipeline sector and other related fields.
This issue of ptj reflects exactly this international and regional interplay — with contributions from Europe, Asia and North America. Its topics ranging from data driven pipeline systems and digital twins to unique isolation applications and the development of new steel for pipes.
Sincerely Yours,
