Nonmetallic Composite Repair of Offshore Crude Oil Pipeline/Riser System
For decades, composite repairs have been widely used to restore onshore pipeline integrity. As subsea pipelines age, a reliable repair method is crucial to maintain pipeline integrity and ensure safe hydrocarbon transportation. This paper presents an alternative repair method using nonmetallic composite materials, qualified to ASME PCC-2 standard with subsea-specific features. The method offers a robust solution for repairing defects in offshore environments, with economic benefits including no hot work, decruding, or long lead times. This article will highlight successful composite repair in subsea and splash zone riser systems, along with insights on non-destructive testing procedures. This study aims to enhance confidence in composite materials for subsea pipeline repairs, contributing to development of composite repair technologies. By providing a reliable solution for ensuring pipeline integrity, this method can help maintain safety and efficiency of offshore hydrocarbon transportation.
