Preface

This is where I have spent almost 25 years working in the pipeline industry for a German operator. During this time, I have experienced our industry from many perspectives, from the introduction of GIS solutions and digital documentation systems to pipeline operations, integrity management and major infrastructure projects. As a new member of the...

Critical pipeline systems are the backbone of modern industrial operations and global economic development, transporting oil, gas, water, and chemicals safely across long distances. Their importance places pipeline integrity, reliability, environmental protection, and operational continuity at the center of industry and regulatory attention. As...

The pipeline industry is at a turning point. In Europe, the course is being set for a future hydrogen backbone, existing networks are being prepared for decarbonization projects, and CO₂ transport chains are being planned. At the same time, the Asia-Pacific region is developing at a rapid pace, characterized by offshore projects and regionally...

Pipelines form the backbone of many countries of the world – quietly transporting ty that fuels modern life. Yet, as the world advances in decarbonisation efforts, these established assets may need to accommodate alternative energy carriers. While they were designed to transport either oil or gas their future might lie in the transportation of...

This year marks a significant milestone for the pipeline community with the inaugural Pipeline Technology Conference Asia (ptc Asia), taking place from 11–13 November 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. ptc Asia promises to be a landmark event, offering a new regional forum for Southeast Asia’s pipeline sector and fostering collaboration among...

As widely recognized, climate change, particularly the rise in global average temperatures, has significantly impacted rainfall patterns, affecting both the amount and distribution of precipitation across various regions. This has led to a growing frequency of intense rainfall events and extreme weather phenomena, such as floods and landslides...

Welcome to the first edition of the Pipeline Technology Journal (ptj) for 2025. As we begin this new year, our focus is on a core aspect of our industry: safety. Safety is both the foundation and driver for inspection and integrity management in our pipeline industry which aims to mitigate loss of containment (LOC) events. History is peppered with...

Following the shockwaves to European energy security in 2022 and the subsequent shutdown of gas delivery from Russia, the German government took strong action in securing alternative natural gas resources. An urgent requirement to replace the lost capacity resulted in the OAL project in the Baltic Sea – a 48” pipeline linking a new-build LNG...

As vacation season ends and we leave behind blue waters, cold mountain air, and colorful foreign dishes, we also return to a new kind of awareness: sensing with artificial intelligence, detecting cyber threats, and anticipating maintenance. Digitalization in the pipeline sector enhances asset management and operations. Real-time data analytics and...

Welcome to the 2nd issue of the Pipeline Technology Journal in 2024 which is addressing aspects of the climate emergency and the role the pipeline industry can play. As an integral part of the advancing global energy transition, it is expected to supply cleaner, more sustainable yet affordable energy in the near future. An emphasis on decarbonizing...

Considering systemic approaches and effective models, with detailed steps and an integrated management program for all components and assets in any pipeline network can enhance the reliability of the network, and promote the system to the next level of excellence. Pipelines comprise of the most efficient methods of energy transportation and...

W. Edwards Deming, a prominent statistician and consultant in the field of quality management during the latter half of the twentieth century, asserted that every corporation should have a skilled statistician reporting to the senior leadership so that critical decisions could be based on sound statistical evidence. The rise of data science as a...

In France, the company operates more than 32,500 km of buried transportation pipelines. These structures cover most of the French territory and are subject to regular monitoring and inspection, as part of our maintenance programs, to ensure their operational safety. Some of these pipelines cross areas that can be hard to access or where field...

As managing directors of the EITEP Institute, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our 10th anniversary edition of the Pipeline Technology Journal (ptj). Since its first issue in 2013, our journal has grown into a widely recognized and respected source of information and analysis for pipeline professionals. As we mark this milestone, we want to...

Apart from typical technical and operational challenges of onshore pipelines i.e. 3rd party, corrosions, geohazards; offshore pipelines and subsea facilities have additional challenges i.e. logistics and weather-related, ultra-high pressure/temperature for ultra-deep/deep water. Thus, that’s the reason why the front-end loading (FEL)/design stages...
