ABB India has provided integrated automation and control solutions to Numaligarh Refinery (NRL) for monitoring and managing a 130-km cross-border oil pipeline between India and Bangladesh, Businessline reported on Wednesday, March 29.

According to the reports, the company said the solutions enable safe and reliable operations of the Indo-Bangla Friendship Pipeline (IBFPL), which will transport diesel from India to Bangladesh.

ABB Ability SCADAvantage, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and a leak detection system will allow NRL to remotely monitor and control crucial pipeline parameters, such as flow, pressure, and temperature, while also detecting leaks.

Inaugurated by Indian and Bangladesh Prime Ministers on March 18, the IBFPL will transport one million tonnes of diesel annually, enabling Bangladesh to access large volumes of fuel to meet its growing domestic demand.

The diesel will be transported from NRL’s marketing terminal at Siliguri to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation’s oil depot in Parbatipur, with about 6km of the cross-border pipeline in India.

“The ABB Ability SCADAvantage system will enable safe and reliable monitoring of the pipeline network, allowing operators to access real-time data and make more informed decisions,” said G Balaji, ABB India’s Senior Vice President Head of Energy Industries.

Balaji added that the solution reduces the risk of adverse incidents and helps to acquire data from remote locations across different geographies, allowing for efficient identification of leakage volume.

Numaligarh Refinery’s Chief Manager of Projects, Rahul Goswami, said that ABB’s system would enable effective monitoring and optimization of pipeline operations, providing access to real-time information, detailed analysis, and timely interventions.
