Petroleum leak from an unused submarine pipeline off the coast of Moni has forced the Cyprus Ports Authority to activate environmental management protocols to curb a potential widespread contamination.

The leak, discovered Saturday by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, prompted immediate action from authorities, who initiated initial intervention measures upon finding the source of the contamination.

According to a press release, the port authority swiftly implemented its environmental management protocols and contracted a licensed company to undertake anti-pollution measures to contain the spill.

Restoration work at the leak site is underway, with the Cyprus Ports Authority demanding that the pipeline's owner take sole responsibility for the incident, completely dismantle and remove the disused pipeline, according to a press release from the authority.

Following the incident, officials stated they are taking all necessary steps to safeguard the marine environment and prevent future occurrences of this nature.

Anti-pollution efforts by licensed contractors are ongoing as the authority presses the pipeline's owner to fulfill its obligations.
