GAIL Completes Nagpur–Jabalpur Pipeline to Boost Central India Energy Grid
GAIL (India) Limited has announced the successful completion of the Nagpur–Jabalpur natural gas pipeline, a critical link in the nation’s expanding energy grid.
Part of the larger 1,702-kilometer Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda Pipeline (MNJPL) project, the new segment is expected to be commissioned shortly following safety clearances.
The 317-kilometer pipeline segment represents a capital investment of more than 1,100 crore (approximately $132 million).
It spans two states, with 256 kilometers running through Madhya Pradesh and roughly 61 kilometers in Maharashtra, connecting key districts including Chhindwara and Seoni.
The project aligns with the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan, aimed at strengthening national infrastructure.
GAIL Independent Director Akhilesh Jain told The Hitavada that the project met its planned timeline and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a more robust national gas grid.
“The pipeline is currently awaiting clearance from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO),” Jain said.
Technical teams recently concluded nitrogen gas trials to ensure the system's integrity, conducting safety checks at various distribution points.
Once operational, the network is expected to alleviate chronic CNG shortages in Jabalpur and surrounding districts.
Currently, limited station availability has hampered vehicle owners, but the new infrastructure is designed to support over 550 CNG stations.
The project’s reach is extensive, with officials estimating it will benefit 8.6 million people across 15 districts, including Betul, Mandla, and Sagar.
Beyond transportation, the pipeline will facilitate Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections for nearly 2.6 million households, providing a cleaner alternative to traditional LPG cylinders.
Industrial hubs are also expected to see a shift in fortune. Access to a steady supply of natural gas is projected to lower manufacturing costs and reduce fuel losses compared to liquid fuels.
A central distribution hub has been established at Kosamghat to manage regional expansion.
The completion comes as the Indian government fast-tracks energy projects to bolster national security amid supply uncertainties in the Strait of Hormuz.
By removing bureaucratic bottlenecks, authorities aim to build a more resilient grid capable of transporting fuel efficiently from import terminals to the country's interior.
