Gaz-System Completes Critical Pipeline Inspection for Gdańsk FSRU Project
Poland’s national gas transmission operator, Gaz-System, has completed a key inspection of its 250-kilometer (155-mile) Gdańsk-to-Gustorzyn gas pipeline, marking a major milestone for the country’s Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) initiative.
The diagnostic run utilized an “intelligent pig”—a high-tech tool equipped with advanced sensors—to travel the full length of the pipe and evaluate its structural integrity.
Gaz-System confirmed that the test results verified high construction standards and technical readiness along the entire route.
The newly inspected pipeline serves as the central land-based artery for the upcoming offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk.
Following the successful diagnostic test, Gaz-System confirmed that the pipeline project has fulfilled all required framework conditions.
Once operational, the line will integrate the floating terminal directly into Poland’s national grid, transporting regasified natural gas to domestic customers and regional energy markets across Central Europe.
The infrastructure effort was financed through a 2.2 billion zloty ($550 million) loan from Poland’s state development bank, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, under the European Union-backed National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO).
The Gdańsk FSRU program represents one of Gaz-System's most critical strategic undertakings to enhance energy security and diversify fuel import routes.
The overall initiative encompasses the deployment of a permanently moored floating LNG vessel alongside offshore mooring infrastructure and the onshore connector pipeline.
The facility will receive ocean-borne LNG cargoes, store the liquid fuel onboard, and convert it back into gas for grid distribution.
With the primary connector pipeline now fully inspected and cleared, the FSRU terminal remains on schedule to begin commercial regasification services at the start of 2028.
