An independent, eight-member committee has been established to conduct a comprehensive review of the fatal April 1 gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Selangor.

The panel, which includes academics, technical consultants, and industry experts, has been tasked with three primary objectives: investigating the cause of the blast, assessing regulatory compliance surrounding the pipeline's operation, and recommending measures to prevent future incidents.

The committee’s formation follows urgent calls for a transparent investigation, notably from Opposition assemblymen, according to Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He emphasised the state government’s commitment to a full, non-partisan probe.

"We value their feedback and hope the findings will give closure to all parties involved," Najwan told reporters following the committee's launch at the Selangor state secretariat yesterday.

He confirmed that the panel’s lineup had been vetted and approved during a state executive council meeting earlier this month.

The massive explosion caused widespread devastation, destroying 81 homes, partially damaging another 81, and leaving 57 homes severely damaged. The blast also wrecked 365 vehicles, including 275 cars and 56 motorcycles.

Initial reports suggested the inferno may have been triggered by stress on the pipeline, potentially caused by soft soil beneath the structure.

Najwan stated that the committee is expected to deliver a full report within two months for presentation to the state government.

"The aim is to identify ways to ensure similar incidents do not recur," he said, adding that the state government would provide full access to information from relevant agencies to assist the probe.

In a separate matter, Najwan also announced that local councils have been directed to intensify monsoon precautions. These measures include stepped-up maintenance of retention ponds and drains, and ensuring the optimal condition of bunds and pumps.
