Indonesian state-owned electricity company subsidiary  PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with PT Timas Suplindo to build the West Natuna Transportation System (WNTS) gas pipeline to Pemping Island, near Batam in the Riau Islands Province of Indonesia.

Aimed at solidifying the nation's natural gas supply, the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) agreement announced on Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, represents a significant step in strengthening the reliability of natural gas supply for the national electricity grid, particularly in the Batam area.

PLN EPI Director of Gas and Fuel Erma Melina Sarahwati called the WNTS–Pemping initiative one of the company’s strategic efforts to expand Indonesia's natural gas infrastructure.

"The construction of the WNTS-Pemping gas pipeline will be a crucial bridge in supporting the transition to clean energy based on natural gas, while strengthening national energy security," Sarahwati said in a written statement, adding that it will be the only pipeline to connect Natuna gas sources directly to the domestic market.

With the project being complex, involving challenging offshore and onshore work, which must be integrated with existing oil and gas infrastructure, Sarahwati emphasized the need for the project to run safely, smoothly, and on schedule, given the "high-risk sea and land areas" involved.

PT Timas Suplindo President Director Sulianto Entong expressed gratitude for PLN EPI’s trust, pledging his company is ready to execute the work professionally, on time, and with the highest safety standards.

Anggawira, an Expert Staff to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, noted that the collaboration aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's directive to bolster national energy security, stating the ministry is directly overseeing the project, ensuring a professional and transparent process with measurable performance indicators.
