Asian conglomerate Jemena, jointly owned by State Grid Corporation of China and Singapore Power, has won a tender in Australia to build a 622 km pipeline to transport shale gas from the Northern Territories to Queensland.

The project is not without its governmental and business critics, who charge that the pipeline would benefit only those in Queensland and not those Australians who live further south in the country.

But Northern Territories' Chief Minister Adam Giles said "the nation-building project will generate investment in regional infrastructure and deliver real jobs with no financial commitment from taxpayers."

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was similarly upbeat, described it as "a coup for Queensland" and said it would create 560 construction jobs across the 600 km line, which would be completed in 2018.

The government said the project would create more than 900 jobs during construction, with 600 of these promised to locals. It is predicted that local businesses will be able to access up to 100 contracts worth about $112 million. There will be maintenance and operations teams based in Tennant Creek and Mount Isa.
