A new map released Thursday highlights the burgeoning hydrogen infrastructure network across Europe, with hundreds of projects in various stages of development.

The updated Hydrogen Infrastructure Map, created by six industry associations, shows the growing interest in hydrogen as a clean energy source, especially in the context of the continent’s efforts to decarbonize its energy system.

The map includes over 100 new projects, many of which were submitted to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) for its 2024 Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP).

“The update of the Joint Hydrogen Infrastructure Map shows the ever-expanding network of hydrogen infrastructure to support the emerging hydrogen market for a decarbonized energy system in Europe,” said a statement from the associations.

Key findings from the map include:

  • A significant increase in hydrogen transmission, storage, terminal, and production projects, particularly those aligned with the TYNDP 2024.
  • A growing number of electrolyzer projects across Europe, though off-taker projects remain relatively few.
  • A wider geographical spread of hydrogen projects, with new initiatives in countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, Crete, Tunisia, and Serbia.

The associations plan to update the map twice a year to reflect the evolving landscape of hydrogen infrastructure in Europe. The next update is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025.
