Onyx Power Signs Deal with OGE to Connect to Germany’s Core Hydrogen Pipeline Network

Onyx Power has signed an agreement with a leading German gas grid operator, Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE), to connect to the “Wilhelmshaven Coastal Hydrogen Pipeline.”
The agreement, signed on Monday, June 9, allows Onyx Power to connect to Germany’s core hydrogen network and feed hydrogen into the countrywide pipeline transport system, which is set to be completed by 2027.
“The possibility of connecting to the coastal pipeline is an important step towards the future viability of our location. The era of coal-fired power generation is coming to an end, which is why we need to set the right course now in order to play a role in the world of renewable energies and the hydrogen economy,” said Jörn Neumann, Head of Onyx Power’s Wilhelmshaven power plant.
“We are very pleased that we have already been able to secure access to the upcoming Germany-wide hydrogen transportation network via the OGE pipeline,” he added.
Although Onyx Power is already working on multiple projects to tap into the hydrogen economy, the existing power plant’s proximity to the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven offers excellent conditions for joining the countrywide hydrogen network.
Onyx Power’s hydrogen ambition is also supported by the ENERGY HUB Port of Wilhelmshaven business association, which focuses on establishing a hydrogen economy in the Friesland region.
The Wilhelmshaven Coastal Line and the North Sea-Ruhr Link are critical hydrogen pipeline networks crucial for transporting hydrogen from production sites in the north to consumption centres.
The two pipelines are also part of the countrywide hydrogen network approved by the German government and the Federal Network Agency in October 2024 to ensure a seamless connection between national hydrogen producers and consumers.
