OQGN Advances Plans for Green Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Pipelines in Oman

Oman’s majority state-owned natural gas pipeline operator, OQ Gas Networks (OQGN), has announced making significant progress in developing dedicated pipelines for green hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO₂) to support the nation’s ambitious energy transition strategy. 

The company, a key subsidiary of the integrated energy group OQ, detailed its progress in its recently released 2024 Sustainability Report, positioning OQGN as a “National Champion for Green Hydrogen and CO₂ Transportation,” a designation conferred by Hydrom, the state entity responsible for Oman’s green hydrogen sector. 

OQGN's CEO, Mansoor al Abdali, emphasised the company's forward-looking approach, stating that the company was "actively exploring opportunities in hydrogen and carbon capture infrastructure, aligning with global energy trends shaping the future of [the] industry."

OQGN has also initiated detailed feasibility studies to explore the technical, commercial, and regulatory aspects of these new pipeline networks as well as actively collaborating with key stakeholders and CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage) developers to create commercial-scale projects. 

This effort supports Oman's Net-Zero 2050 targets, which hinge on the successful development of low-carbon industries. 

OQGN’s plans envisage an open-access hydrogen pipeline network that will connect green hydrogen production sites, powered by solar and wind energy, to coastal processing and export facilities. 

The pipeline network is being developed in coordination with Hydrom's planned projects in major hubs, including Al Duqm, Salalah, and Al Jazir. OQGN plans to repurpose existing natural gas pipelines for this network as natural gas demand diminishes. 

Furthermore, OQGN is working on a separate open-access CO₂ pipeline network to link emission sources to storage sites. 

The company has also set ambitious decarbonization targets, aiming for a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and an 82% reduction by 2040, as part of its strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
