Origin Energy has signed a multi-year agreement to deploy the cloud-native Pointerra3D platform across roughly 750 kilometers of gas transmission pipeline in Queensland, aiming to replace manual field inspections with automated corridor monitoring and digital twin analytics.

Under the program, the Australian energy company will use drone-acquired LiDAR and aerial imagery to conduct quarterly surveys along the pipeline route.

The collected spatial data will be fed into Pointerra3D, generating an evolving digital twin that enables engineers and asset managers to track changes over time, assess operational risks, and pinpoint areas requiring targeted maintenance.

Maintaining geographically dispersed linear infrastructure has traditionally presented logistical challenges for pipeline operators.

Beyond collecting survey data, companies struggle to rapidly convert repetitive measurements into timely, consistent, and actionable insights.

The new software addresses this bottleneck by processing incoming spatial data and delivering automated analytics within 24 hours of receiving validated survey files.

The platform provides a suite of targeted analytics, including terrain and vegetation change detection, encroachment monitoring, third-party interference detection, and depth-of-cover analysis.

It also calculates erosion volumes, segments vegetation growth, and automatically highlights key points of interest.

Asset teams can securely access these insights through standard web browsers, reducing the need for direct field exposure.

The commercial contract follows a successful proof-of-concept phase demonstrating how spatial analytics can streamline repeatable monitoring across extended infrastructure networks.

Origin Energy plans to assess expanding the digital monitoring workflow to other upstream and downstream assets, such as wellheads, gathering networks, and central processing facilities.

Pointerra Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Ian Olson noted that the deal reflects growing industry demand for automated, scalable cloud solutions capable of improving regulatory compliance outcomes and operational safety.

By shifting from manual spot checks to automated spatial analytics, the initiative creates a repeatable framework for monitoring critical Australian energy infrastructure.
