Petrobras Eyes Offshore Pipeline for Colombia’s Sirius Gas Field
Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras may include the offshore Sirius gas project in Colombia in its upcoming 2027–2031 business plan, provided it secures the necessary environmental approval, an executive said Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at an industry event, Exploration and Production Director Sylvia Anjos expressed optimism about the project's timeline and regulatory progress.
"I think it should appear [in the business plan] if we get the environmental license," Anjos said.
Central to the project's development is an innovative infrastructure strategy centered on a direct subsea transport system.
The current plan foresees the construction of an extensive pipeline designed to carry natural gas from the seabed directly to the Colombian coast.
By routing the gas straight to shore through the underwater pipeline network, Petrobras eliminates the need for a traditional offshore production platform, significantly streamlining infrastructure requirements for the field.
Petrobras serves as the primary operator of the Sirius offshore gas field, holding a 44.4% stake alongside Colombia’s state oil company, Ecopetrol.
While the pipeline design offers an efficient engineering approach, the project’s official inclusion in Petrobras' production curve remains contingent on clearing environmental regulatory hurdles and fulfilling local social governance requirements.
Anjos noted that Petrobras has made tangible progress toward obtaining its environmental license. However, the company must first conclude a series of mandatory consultations with local communities along the region.
These prior consultations are a strict legal requirement aimed at safeguarding the rights of ethnic communities and indigenous populations that may be affected by the onshore and offshore development, including the pipeline corridor.
Petrobras reported earlier this year that it had completed more than half of the required consultations.
If approved and integrated into the 2027–2031 capital spending plan—scheduled for release later this year—the Sirius project and its subsea pipeline system will mark a major international expansion for the Brazilian energy giant, expanding its natural gas portfolio in Latin America.
