Poland to Contest European Commission's OPAL Decision
The European Commission's recent decision to grant Gazprom more capacity in the OPAL pipeline serving markets in central Europe has been roundly denounced in Poland, with key government officials labeling the decision destabilizing and a threat to Poland's energy security.
"The situation threatens the security of gas supplies in the EU, particularly in the region of Central Europe," said Joanna Wajda, former EU Correspondent for Polish Public Television TVP in Brussels.
"This raises a serious risk to the security of gas supply for Poland by becoming dependent on one source of supply, from Russia."
Poland will appeal the decision through the European Court of Justice. In addition, last month the Polish state-run gas company PGNiG PGN.WA sued the European Commission over the decision.
