Terrorists belonging to the Islamic States attacked a section of Egypt’s natural gas pipeline in the northern Sinai region on Sunday, May 1, 2022. According to Egypt’s security officials, the blast sparked up a fire, with no casualties reported in the incident.

While the attack on the vital natural gas pipeline was unprecedented, it wasn’t a surprise since the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center reported on April 27 that the ISIS terrorists had intensified their activities two weeks before the attack.

The attacks were attributed to the outlawed organization’s revenge mission declared for the deaths of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, as well as the former ISIS spokesperson killed in US-led operations in Idlib, Syria, back in February.

According to the intelligence reports, the revenge mission activities included a series of attacks in the northern Sinai, with the attack on an Egyptian army patrol south of Sheikh Zuweid town on April 25 being part of their mission.

The attack on the army patrol left two Egyptian soldiers dead, with a third injured. An exchange of fire between the ISIS militia and the local Sinai Bedouin tribal union fighters supporting the Egyptian Army was also reported during the incident.

In a report released by the Meir Amit Center on April 7, 2022, the center noted Eqyptian government had announced a 6-month extension of the presidential decree announcing a specia security operations in the Sinai Peninsula.
