Pipeline infrastructure companies completed 14 liquid pipeline projects in the United States last year, an updated Liquids Pipeline Projects Database from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows. Seven of the 14 projects are for crude oil pipelines, while the other seven are for hydrocarbon gas liquids.

Despite having numerous liquid pipeline projects completed, no petroleum product pipeline project was completed within the same window.

The completed 14 projects consisted of six new pipelines, five expansion projects aiming at expanding the existing, two projects for reversed commodity flow through the pipeline, and one project involving a complete change in commodity transported through the pipeline.

According to the project's information at various stages shown in the Liquids Pipeline Projects Database, 11 projects were announced, and two were listed as under construction in 2021. Ten more pipeline projects were cancelled during the same year, and five were put on temporary hold by the end of 2021.

Remarkable Project Completions

Notable pipeline projects completed include Enbridge's expansion project for Line 3 and Line 61, transporting crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Illinois. Line 3 runs from Alberta, Canada, to Superior, Wisconsin, while Line 61 goes from Superior, Wisconsin, to Pontiac, Illinois.

Marathon Pipe Line's Capline Reversal project reversed the commodity flow direction to a south-flowing pipeline, running from Patoka, Illinois, and flowing to terminals at St. James, Louisiana.

Energy Transfer's Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) Expansion project boosted the pipeline's capacity to 180,000 barrels/day along with the DAPL systems by making a few modifications and adding horsepower at the pump station. The system runs from North Dakota through South Dakota, Iowa, to Patoka, Illinois.

Liquids Pipeline Projects Database provides detailed information about more than 250 ongoing, future and past projects dealing with liquid pipelines in the US. The pipelines transport hydrocarbon gas liquids, crude oil, petroleum, and refinery products. The database contains the details of a wide range of projects dating back to 2010.
