Trans - Europa Natural Gas Pipeline (TENP) Reverse Flow Gas Project To Go Ahead: Big Boost to European Energy Security

Moving to strengthen energy security in Europe the Bundesnetzagentur (National Regulatory Authority) has approved the Trans - Europa Natural Gas Pipeline (TENP) reverse flow project enabling gas flows from Italy and France into Germany, significantly improving Germany's supply situation with an additional 8 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Currently the TENP system accommodates north to south flows from Belgium and the Netherlands through Germany in the direction of Switzerland. The TENP reverse flow project entails the reversal of the compressor station Hügelheim as well as the construction of a deodorization plant. This will enable gas flows from south to north via Entry Wallbach. Building on its partnership with Fluxys in the TENP pipeline, Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE) recently joined the project.

Reversing gas flows from south to north has been listed as European Project of Common Interest (PCI) since 2012. This PCI status has just been renewed.
Indeed, it makes possible a broad range of new options regarding diversifying energy sources for Europe, as gas from Italy includes the current North African, Russian and LNG sources landing in the country as well as gas from the Southern Gas Corridor under construction: gas from Azerbaijan and other sources in the wider Caspian region, the Eastern Meditteranean region and the Middle East that might become available through the corridor.
