The USA has begun to devise plans to supply Europe with natural gas in the event of a Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

This was reported over the weekend by Reuters with the story being picked up by numerous national news organizations throughout Europe.  According to the dispatch, representatives of the State Department have spoken to gas companies about their ability to deliver greater supplies of natural gas to Europe in the event of disruptions in the Russian supply chain. They also discussed the prospect of deferring any maintenance work on gas infrastructure in order to keep gas production as high as possible.

The EU imports around a third of its gas requirements from the Russian Federation and making up this difference through other suppliers would be difficult.

It is not known which gas supply companies the State Department contacted in its inquiry,  A speaker at the National Security Council would not comment on the matter.
