GASCADE Gastransport GmbH and rostock EnergyPort cooperation GmbH (REPCO) announced last Friday they were joining forces to accelerate the development of the hydrogen industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a coastal region in northeastern Germany.

According to a press release published by Gascade on March 15, 2024, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to connect REPCO's HyTechHafen Rostock hydrogen production project and the industrial port of Lubmin to major consumption areas in Berlin/Brandenburg and Halle/Leipzig/Leuna via GASCADE's existing and planned hydrogen pipelines.

"This partnership will play a key role in opening up eastern German urban centers to hydrogen," said Ludger Hümbs, Head of Corporate Development at GASCADE.

"By combining the potential of hydrogen production in Rostock and Lubmin with transportation to major consumption areas, we can significantly contribute to Germany's energy transition," he added.

REPCO's Managing Director, Dr. Ralf Tschullik, echoed Hümbs' sentiment, highlighting the importance of collaboration for establishing a hydrogen hub in northeastern Germany.

The partnership specifically targets connecting the HyTechHafen Rostock project to the 120-kilometre Rostock-Wrangelsburg hydrogen pipeline by 2028, with the connection expected to serve as a starting point for the distribution of green hydrogen throughout the region.

With officials believing the Rostock and Lubmin areas offer ideal conditions for producing and importing green hydrogen, the region holds a great potential for green energy.

The combined infrastructure of the Rostock-Wrangelsburg connection, and the Flow hydrogen transport system, are designed to tap into both regional potential and broader German and European markets.
