The Indian state - run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) transporting crude oil in an underground oil pipeline running through Tiruvarur District of the Tamil Nadu state in southern India, has sprung a leak damaging a large area with samba rice variety preferred by local Tamils

The land, owned and cultivated by Dhanasekaran, a Tamil area farmer, has suffered significant contamination, with crude oil leakage expanding into neighboring fields and into the village itself.

This is but the most recent of numerous spills in Tiruvarur.  The ONGC said after the previous pipeline leak in February of this year that the company would begin a study to come up measures to prevent further crude oil leaks in the future.
