TC Energy Pipeline Rupture Sparks Wildfire in Alberta, No reported Casualties
A section of TC Energy's NGTL gas pipeline system ruptured and ignited on Tuesday, sparking a wildfire in a remote area of Yellowhead County, Alberta, Reuters reported on Wednesday, April 17, citing the company’s statement.
According to a statement by the company, the fire was located about 40 kilometers northwest of Edson.
TC Energy said in a statement a statement that the initial gas fire at the rupture site had been extinguished, with the company assisting Alberta Wildfire in containing a secondary fire caused by the incident.
The company also confirmed there were no injuries reported and the company was working closely with first responders in the region to a vert the risk of a widespread fire in the region.
“Once air monitoring is complete and a safe environment is confirmed, investigation activities will proceed and concurrently, survey crews and an environmental inspector will make observations and assessments to inform repair and restoration planning,” TC Energy said in a media statement.
“We are committed to a thorough investigation.”
The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) sent inspectors to the site to monitor the company's response, oversee cleanup efforts, and determine the cause of the pipeline rupture. Initial investigations indicate the pipeline failure caused the wildfire.
TC Energy has isolated and shut down the affected section of the NGTL pipeline. The remainder of the system is functioning normally with no disruptions to commercial operations.
The NGTL system is a vast network responsible for transporting natural gas produced in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) to markets across Canada and the United States.
