Open Grid Europe and Thyssengas Complete 216-km Zeelink Pipeline
The last weld seam for the Zeelink Gas Pipeline was completed yesterday at the Pressure and Measuring Station in Marbeck / Western Münsterland. This so-called Golden Weld Seam symbolizes the end of the work on the pipeline itself and with this the final milestone for the pipeline contractors. All pipes have now been placed in the pipeline trench and connected to each other. Post-construction acts, such as venting the pipeline and re-cultivating the pipeline route, can take place. Project partners are Open Grid Europe (OGE) and Thyssengas.
All together 13,000 pipes, weighing 100,000 tons, with approximately 30, 000 welding seams, make up a 216-km long pipeline, which goes from Lichtenbusch in the area of Aachen to Legden near Münsterland. First plans for the Zeelink construction began back in 2015. The district governments in Cologne, Dusseldorf and Munster provided the required planning approval decisions in early 2019. Afterwards within two years the 216-km pipeline, the compressor station Wuerselen and three gas pressure regulation and measuring systems were constructed.
Franz Josef Kissling, Project Leader, said this at the conclusion of the work: We built Zeelink on time, within budget and with a high degree of security-conscious measures. And bear in mind we did this while fulfilling all of the limiting Corona Virus regulations impacting our work.
Zeelink will give parts of northwest Germany direct access to the Zeebrugge LNG import terminal in Belgium.
This pipeline is an essential link in Germany’s current efforts to convert the northern German gas grid from low calorific L gas, sourced from the soon-to-close Groningen gas field in Holland, to high calorific H gas, which is imported from Qatar, the United States and Nigeria, contributing to Germany's route and source diversification.
